How to Choose a PR agency for Cloud computing

By Aidan Sowa, CEO and Founder, Aerovector | Published

Cloud computing sells an invisible product: capacity in someone else's building, rented by the second, trusted with everything a company owns. When the product cannot be seen, the public record is the showroom. This guide tests agency candidates against spending forecasts, market share research, security alliance findings, and outage data rather than against their keynote reels. The context is a market moving at unusual speed: Gartner forecast worldwide public cloud end user spending of 723.4 billion dollars for 2025, up 21.5 percent in a year (Gartner, 2024).

I Discrimen

In cloud, you are not choosing who tells your story; you are choosing who explains your failures in advance

The outage statement is written, in effect, on the day you pick your agency.

Every cloud vendor will eventually publish two kinds of news: the launch it planned and the incident it did not. Buyers know this, so they read your planned news as a preview of your unplanned honesty.

An agency evaluation that only tests launch thinking is therefore half an evaluation. The other half asks how the team writes about dependency, degradation, and recovery while customers are refreshing a status page and journalists are timing your updates.

Hire for both halves. The second half is where reputations in this category are actually decided.

II Machina

Cloud buying runs on concentration, and concentration makes every vendor a system level story

When three providers hold most of the market, a challenger's story must explain the system, not just itself.

Synergy Research Group counted quarterly cloud infrastructure revenues of 106.9 billion dollars for the third quarter of 2025, with trailing twelve month revenues reaching 390 billion dollars (Synergy Research Group, 2025). Public infrastructure and platform services grew 30 percent in that quarter alone.

Gartner predicted that 90 percent of organisations will adopt a hybrid cloud approach through 2027 (Gartner, 2024). Your buyers therefore live in mixed estates, and they judge vendors on how honestly those vendors describe interoperability, exit costs, and shared responsibility.

An agency that writes as if your platform exists alone will produce copy your buyers discount on sight. The machine rewards vendors who explain the whole estate and their place inside it. Our guide on PR agency selection for enterprise software shows how the same system level honesty plays with platform committees.

III Exemplum

Outage economics show why cloud buyers read incident coverage as a pricing signal

An outage is a product demonstration nobody scheduled, and buyers grade it like one.

Uptime Institute's 2025 survey found that 57 percent of operators said their most recent major outage cost more than 100,000 dollars, and for the second year running about one in five put the figure above 1 million dollars (Clarke Energy, 2026). Power problems remained the most common cause of serious outages in that research.

Now place yourself in a buyer's chair during vendor selection. The finalists' feature matrices look similar, the reference calls sound rehearsed, and then the buyer searches each finalist's name beside the word outage. What surfaces is unscripted evidence: how fast the vendor acknowledged trouble, how precisely it described impact, and how completely it explained the fix.

That search is the real product demonstration. Ask agency candidates to show you incident coverage they have shaped and to walk you through the decisions behind each update. You are buying the judgement those decisions reveal. Our cybersecurity agency guide goes deeper on the incident craft itself, which cloud vendors need in an especially public form.

IV Damnum

Cost confusion is the quiet tax on cloud brands, and silence lets competitors set your price story

A bill your customer cannot explain becomes a story your competitor gets to tell.

Flexera reported that managing cloud spend is the top cloud challenge for 84 percent of organisations, that expected cloud spending growth was 28 percent, and that budgets were already exceeding their limits by 17 percent on average (Flexera, 2025). A third of organisations were spending more than 12 million dollars a year on public cloud alone.

In that environment, buyers interrogate value relentlessly. If your public record offers no serious material on cost governance, efficiency engineering, or workload economics, the FinOps conversation about your platform happens without your evidence in the room.

The damage is quiet but cumulative: shorter commitments, harder renewals, and a discount requested to compensate for uncertainty. An agency worth hiring treats cost clarity as a story franchise, returning to it with data each quarter rather than mentioning pricing only when a journalist forces the subject.

V Genus

Cloud stories divide into capacity stories, control stories, and continuity stories

Name the family before you brief the story, because each family answers to a different fear.

Capacity stories cover scale, regions, performance, and the new workloads your platform can carry. Control stories cover cost governance, security posture, and the customer's ability to see and steer what runs where.

Continuity stories cover resilience, backup discipline, and incident conduct. Most cloud marketing overproduces the first family and starves the other two, which is exactly backwards relative to what the research in this guide says buyers worry about.

Story familyBuyer fear it answersEvidence that convinces
CapacityWill it scale with us and stay fastBenchmarks, region expansion, adoption figures
ControlCan we govern cost and risk on this platformFinOps material, security rankings, audit artefacts
ContinuityWhat happens on the platform's worst dayOutage record, recovery data, backup guidance

fons: Cloud Security Alliance Top Threats to Cloud Computing, 2024, reported by Silicon UK, and Flexera 2025 State of the Cloud Report release, 2025, for the risk and cost evidence behind this table.

The Cloud Security Alliance ranked misconfiguration and inadequate change control as the leading cloud threat in its 2024 report, ahead of identity and access weaknesses and insecure interfaces (Silicon UK, 2024). A control story built on that ranking meets buyers at their documented anxiety rather than at your feature list.

VI Regio

Cloud demand is global, but outage forgiveness is local and cultural

The same incident reads as candour in one market and as incompetence in another, and only local knowledge tells you which.

Synergy Research Group found the cloud market growing in every region, with India, Australia, Indonesia, Ireland, Mexico, and South Africa among the countries growing above the worldwide average in its third quarter 2025 data (Synergy Research Group, 2025). Your story therefore lands in regulatory cultures with different disclosure habits and different expectations of corporate apology.

Media trust also varies the reception. Gallup measured trust in mass media at 31 percent in the United States in 2024 (Gallup, 2025), so an American buyer cross checks your incident account against status data and peer posts, while other markets lean harder on regulator statements or local press interpretation.

Ask agencies to brief your top three regions separately: which titles, which regulators, which community channels, and which disclosure norms. A single worldwide incident playbook is a fiction that survives only until the first regional headline contradicts it. Connected device vendors meet a version of this problem too, as our guide on PR for Internet of Things companies explains.

VII Occasio

AI workloads have reopened the cloud story, and the opening favours vendors who publish their workings

Every provider claims AI readiness; the ones who show the arithmetic get cited.

Synergy Research Group reported that full year 2025 cloud infrastructure revenues reached 419 billion dollars, with public infrastructure and platform services growing 34 percent in the fourth quarter, driven primarily by generative AI demand (Synergy Research Group, 2026). Growth at that pace makes buyers suspicious of capacity claims, power claims, and pricing claims in equal measure.

The opening is for vendors who publish workings: where capacity sits, what a workload costs, how efficiency is measured, and what happens when demand spikes. Search tools reward that specificity as well. Pew Research Center found that users clicked a traditional result in only 8 percent of visits where an AI summary appeared (Campaign, 2025), so the vendors quoted inside summaries are the ones whose published workings an engine can lift with confidence.

An agency chasing this opening will propose a cadence of technical explainers, cost breakdowns, and capacity reporting, written to be cited rather than merely read. That is a different skill from launch publicity, and it is the skill the AI workload era prices highest. It is also the skill at the centre of our guide on PR agency choice for artificial intelligence companies.

VIII Structura

Structure the agency test around the status page, the cost story, and the recovery narrative

You will learn more from one simulated bad afternoon than from ten credentials decks.

Run three exercises with each finalist. First, a degradation simulation: a partial regional failure with incomplete information, scored on the speed and accuracy of the first two public updates.

Second, a cost story exercise: the team turns your efficiency data into a narrative a finance reader can verify, with sources named and assumptions stated. Third, a recovery narrative: after the simulated fix, the team drafts the post incident account your customers will keep, the one that explains cause, remedy, and prevention without varnish.

ExerciseWhat you scoreFailing performance
Degradation simulationUpdate speed, precision about impact, correction handlingVague reassurance and a silent second hour
Cost storyVerifiable numbers and stated assumptionsSavings claims with no workload described
Recovery narrativeCause, remedy, and prevention in plain orderA victory lap that skips the cause

fons: CISA StopRansomware Guide, 2025, and Cloud Security Alliance findings reported by Security Boulevard, 2024, for the resilience and threat practices these exercises are scored against.

CISA's StopRansomware Guide advises cloud users to enable logging, protect backups with delete protection or object lock, and understand the shared responsibility model for their environments (CISA, 2025). An agency whose recovery narrative reflects that guidance will sound like an operator. One that treats the exercise as copywriting will sound like a brochure, and your buyers can hear the difference.

IX Consilium

Sign the partner you would trust with your status page at the worst hour of the year

Choose as if the incident were already on the calendar, because in this category it is.

Close the selection by weighting the exercises over the portfolio. Give the degradation simulation the largest share of the score, the cost story the second share, and general category experience the smallest, then see which candidate still leads.

Agree the operating details before signature: who can publish a holding update without waiting for a meeting, how customer communications and press lines stay synchronised, and how post incident accounts are approved while the facts are still warm.

Then scan the wider public relations services list with the winner so research, counsel, and reporting are contracted as one system. Compare your shortlist method with our guide on choosing a PR agency for SaaS companies if your platform sells by subscription, because the renewal logic there sharpens the continuity test here. The right partner will feel less like a publicity vendor and more like a second operations discipline, and that feeling is the correct signal.

Questions

What is the most important quality in a PR agency for a cloud company?

Incident judgement, exercised in public, on a clock. Your agency will help phrase degradation and recovery updates that customers and journalists treat as operational evidence. Test that judgement with a realistic simulation before you weigh anything else, and score accuracy above speed when the two conflict.

How should a cloud vendor prepare its agency before an outage happens?

Agree the holding language, the approval chain, and the customer communication sequence in calm months, and rehearse them with a partial failure scenario. Preparation also means a published record of resilience practice that journalists can find during the incident. An agency onboarded only for launches will improvise under pressure, and improvisation reads as concealment.

Does our agency need deep cloud engineering knowledge?

It needs working fluency: regions, shared responsibility, misconfiguration risk, and cost governance, enough to draft precisely and to ask engineers the right questions. The Cloud Security Alliance rankings give a fair syllabus for that fluency. Depth can be borrowed from your architects; fluency cannot be borrowed during a live incident.

How can PR help with cloud cost concerns among our customers?

By treating cost as a story franchise rather than a pricing page. Publish efficiency evidence, workload economics, and governance guidance on a rhythm, with numbers a finance reader can verify. Flexera's findings say spend management is your buyers' leading challenge, so the vendor who helps them think about cost earns attention that feature news cannot buy.

What should cloud PR measure?

Measure the accuracy and speed of incident coverage, citation of your technical explainers by search tools and trade press, and the share of coverage that addresses control and continuity rather than launches alone. Also track whether sales hears your cost and resilience claims repeated back correctly. Those measures map to how committees actually decide.

How do regional differences affect a cloud PR programme?

Disclosure norms, regulator expectations, and trusted media differ by market, so briefing lists and incident playbooks should be built per region for your largest markets. A global narrative still matters for consistency of fact. The craft is holding the facts constant while letting emphasis and channels vary with local culture.

When should a cloud company change its PR agency?

Change when incident updates are slow or vague, when the programme produces launches but no control or continuity evidence, or when the team cannot explain your platform's place in a hybrid estate. Also change if the agency resists simulations. In cloud, an untested partner is an unpriced risk sitting inside your biggest reputational exposure.

How this guide was built

This guide draws on cloud spending forecasts, market share research, security alliance threat rankings, outage survey reporting, and regulator guidance, each cited where it is used and listed in full below. Its limitations are worth stating: forecasts and market shares describe the whole cloud market rather than your segment, and outage cost figures come from operator surveys that blend very different incidents. Use the structure here to run your evaluation, then let your own incident history, renewal data, and regional knowledge set the final weights.

XI Incipe

The continuity record this guide demands is the record Aerovector helps you keep

The argument throughout is that cloud buyers grade your unplanned honesty as product evidence, and that cost and control stories deserve the same craft as launches. Aerovector is organised around that grading: it helps clients rank for AI search results and guarantees media coverage, which in turn generates leads. Its Coverage Reporting tracks whether your continuity and control evidence is landing, the Newsroom Calendar keeps that evidence appearing between incidents, and the Message House discipline holds your incident language inside what your engineers can stand behind.

If your current record is strong on launches and thin on the other two families, send your details through the form on the contact page and describe your last incident, your cost story, and the region where the next headline will matter most.
